Potential Vorticity Generation in Breaking Gravity Waves

چکیده
Potential vorticity (PV) is an important quantity in stratified flows because it conserved following the flow absence of forcing and viscous diffusive effects. However, as shown by previous work for unstratified turbulence, viscosity diffusion, when present, are not purely dissipative can create potential even none present initially. In this work, we use direct numerical simulations to investigate generation enstrophy (integrated square PV) turbulence. Simulations initialized with a two-dimensional standing internal gravity wave, which has no apart from some low-level random noise; result, all comes Significant found wave breaks, maximum increases increasing Reynolds number. The mechanism initial PV spanwise diffusion buoyancy perturbations, grow three-dimensionalizes, into direction vorticity. terms responsible small-scale sensitive under-resolution, so high resolution required obtain robust results.

Gravity Waves in a Horizontal Shear Flow. Part II: Interaction between Gravity Waves and Potential Vorticity Perturbations
Interaction among potential vorticity perturbations and propagating internal gravity waves in a horizontally sheared zonal flow is investigated. In the strong stratification limit, an initial vorticity perturbation weakly excites two propagating gravity waves while the density component of the potential vorticity perturbation is significantly amplified, potentially leading to convective collaps...
متن کاملNumerical investigation of turbulence generation in non-breaking potential waves
[1] Theoretically, potential waves cannot generate the vortex motion, but scale considerations indicate that if the steepness of waves is not too small, Reynolds number can exceed critical values. This means that in presence of initial non-potential disturbances the orbital velocities can generate the vortex motion and turbulence. In the paper, this problem was investigated numerically on basis...
متن کاملA Probe of Primordial Gravity Waves and Vorticity
A formalism for describing an all-sky map of the polarization of the cosmic microwave background is presented. The polarization pattern on the sky can be decomposed into two geometrically distinct components. One of these components is not coupled to density inhomogeneities. A non-zero amplitude for this component of polarization can only be caused by tensor or vector metric perturbations. This...
متن کاملSolitary gravity water waves with an arbitrary distribution of vorticity
This paper presents an existence theory for small-amplitude solitary-wave solutions to the classical water-wave problem in the absence of surface tension and with an arbitrary distribution of vorticity. The hydrodynamic problem is formulated as an infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian system in which the horizontal spatial direction is the time-like variable. A centre-manifold reduction technique is...
متن کاملGravity Waves in a Horizontal Shear Flow. Part I: Growth Mechanisms in the Absence of Potential Vorticity Perturbations
Interaction of internal gravity waves with a horizontal shear flow in the absence of potential vorticity perturbations is investigated making use of closed-form solutions. Localized wave packet trajectories are obtained, the energy growth mechanisms occurring are identified, and the potential role of perturbation growth in wave breaking is assessed. Regarding meridional propagation, the wave pa...
